After the Petty family chimed in for the King to start his engine, the entire field roared to life. A parade lap with King Petty upfront gave way to a green flag and soon NASCAR fans were engrossed in the final race of Petty’s extraordinary career. At lap 97, the dream was over. An accident took Petty and the No. 43 STP Pontiac out of contention. However, the day would not be done for the King. With two laps remaining in the race, Petty maneuvered the STP Pontiac back on track, speeding past his last checkered flag. A post-race parade lap accompanied by the din of 100,000 cheering fans served as the final bow for NASCAR’s most prolific champion. Now, fans can hang on to a special memento devoted to Petty’s final season: a 1:24-scale die-cast replica of the No. 43 STP/Fan Appreciation Tour Pontiac Grand Prix. On April 9, 2005 at Martinsville Speedway, Bobby Labonte made NASCAR racing history behind the wheel of the No. 47 Chevrolet Silverado race truck that featured a paint scheme with country music artists, Trick Pony. In only his fifth career NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start, Labonte adeptly steered the No. 47 Rodeway Inn/Econo Lodge-Trick Pony Chevrolet around the famous half-mile oval and into the lead, remaining up front for 64 of the race’s total 250 laps. Impressively, Labonte also led the lap that mattered most: the final one. When Labonte took the No. 47 Chevrolet Silverado truck to victory lane, he created a new category for winning at the Martinsville, Va.-based racetrack. He became the first driver to win races in all three major NASCAR circuits at the Virginia “paperclip” track. This month, ARC is issuing a special Raced Version edition of Labonte’s history-making No. 47 Rodeway Inn/Econo Lodge-Trick Pony Chevrolet race truck.
